The Belize Ministry Story
We All Are One in Mission
In 2012, First Lutheran Church of Brookings, South Dakota, began a ministry partnership in Belize. What started as a single step of faith has grown into an ongoing journey of service, learning, and lasting relationships. Each year, teams from Brookings have traveled to Belize to serve alongside local communities: building connections, supporting education, and sharing God’s love in meaningful ways.
Through these trips, volunteers have discovered that faithful accompaniment is not only about what we give, but also what we receive. We grow in faith, understanding, and gratitude as we witness how God is active - whether in the classroom, the church, or the neighborhood.
We are especially blessed to have Dee Shanley serving as a ministry representative at Alvin L. Young Nazarene High School in Belize. Her on-site presence has opened new possibilities for First Lutheran Church and the Brookings community to learn from and support students and their families. Through Dee’s leadership, communication, and care, we’ve been able to strengthen a connection with the school and nurture deeper relationships that extend far beyond each trip.

Completing projects and supporting student scholarships is supported by fundraising. Our community comes together each year through events such as Purses For A Powerful Purpose, Deck The Halls Christmas Tree Display, and an Appreciation Luncheon. These gatherings are filled with fellowship and generosity, reflecting the joy and compassion that sustain this ministry. Thanks be to God for the support of this ministry within our congregation and among community friends who help this work thrive.
This ministry has become a partnership built on faith, compassion, and hope. Together, we continue to learn, serve, and celebrate the work God is doing through this connection between Brookings and Belize.
